Life is strange…

2020 seemed to have had started brilliantly. Freshly single and without a job, I was prone to rediscover what it felt to be adventurous and daring. I was alone. Even weirder: I was travelling alone for once. It felt so invigorating to be somewhere different during this god-awful month of January that seemed as miserable as my prospects for the future. But soon after -way too soon, really- I was back to the old habits and the tricky part of life that forces you to take responsibility and make decisions. It literally was all that was left. And, at the same time, the pandemic doomed all of our plans. And I was there, more lost than ever, lost in an ocean of choices and loneliness, though I was showered by love, but a love I thought myself not worthy of. And, then, it just all fell apart… The exact moment 2020 was waiting for to come and save me. It was when I hit rock-bottom that I started to understand… It felt as if I had been waiting for this moment. For this moment to welcome back old friends into my life: creation, books and art (as well as Animal Crossing, if we’re being perfectly honest).

Life is strange… Almost 365 days ago -before the first lockdown hit all of our expectations- I started writing a text with those exact same words. It’s really strange, indeed. The song I have shared with this post says: “everything changes, life is strange.” But, “does it, does it really?” (to be said with Ross Geller’s voice). The beginning of 2021 sure looks like many different things. But, at first glance, it doesn’t really feel like a lot has changed over the past year… I mean, I feel like I had been stuck somewhere. Heart-broken once again and still nowhere near Shanghai (where I was supposed to be right now, as an Au Pair…), It could be easy for me to be feeling as if everything remained the exact same. But fortunately, I am not. There has been a slight change. And, as little it is, it does make a huge  difference. It took work. Work on myself and on my emotions, on my reactions, on my way to see the world, really. I am still heart-broken and quite simply just broken but it does feel different. I am grateful. I took me a year but it took me somewhere. Slowly but surely, I am now learning to untangle the knots I had created in my stomach, my head and my heart.

Beginning of the year 2020, I was already talking about how letting go of things was -not only needed- but crucial.  I sort of knew I was going somewhere with this but I was not quite able to know the how, why, when and where. And, then, therapy came along. It took months out my life, months of talking, understanding, crying and then slowly starting to feel validated, listened to and understood, more importantly. There it was: Borderline Personality Disorder. It was as if the weight of my whole entire life had finally been taken of my shoulders. Suddenly, I could breathe. And it felt like anything was possible. I could do it: I could let go, I could learn to love myself. A little bit of love, but a whole new perspective on my toxic patterns and behaviors. 2020: excruciating, terribly difficult and violently heartbreaking but also so damn liberating.

2020, my dear friend, I know I’ve said plenty of things about you, but I still feel like you have helped me in ways I wouldn’t even have imagined. I won’t hate you that much, I promise.

To old words but new cycles,

And the hope of having you all by my side on this new journey,

Happy new year, guys. Love on each and every one of you.
